Top Sports for Injuries
Basketball and bicycling are among the most
popular sports in the United States in terms of participation,
and they are also the leaders in causing injury, according to
a report from the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The academy cites statistics compiled by the
Consumer Product Safety Commission showing that nearly 700,000
basketball-related injuries and nearly 600,000 bicycling injuries
were treated in emergency rooms in 1995. The two sports were
the only two that ranked among the top 10 in both categories.
At the same time, even more leisurely sports
yield plenty of injuries. For example, nearly 40,000 golf-related
injuries were treated in hospital emergency rooms in 1995.
